Highly trained, certifiably legit and registered, I am indeed, and yet my client is someone who waits to call...
They’re the tough nuts, I get it. But by the time I see them, they’re at the end of their ropes, overwhelmed and over-read, as they’ve purchased and tried to follow every trendy health/diet book on the market.
So my question is this:
How could a person successfully follow the advice of any book when every single body on the planet has its own alphabet? It’s own language? I mean, come on, this isn’t hippy talk - you’ve heard of genetic codes.
Food is information. When you eat, your body takes that information in, breaks it down (in its very particular way) and then - THE BODY RESPONDS.
It responds no matter who you are, where you are, how much money you have, or what your plan is.
No matter if it’s 2009 and you are, of all places...at Burning Man.
It was then and there in Nevada in 106 degrees with people out wandering the Black Rock desert expecting to find themselves that I was curled fetally on the floor of a dirty, brown carpeted camper trailer expecting to meet my maker.
The pain was back. Wanting to eat its way out through the walls of my abdomen because, for some of us, when the body is inflamed, it responds passionately.
I was in these fits of passion often. No doctor could help me and, to add insult to injury, I was a dietician then too, so I couldn’t even help myself. At barely 30 years old, I thought I would slowly waste away from the world via my collection of pernicious symptoms:
Chronic abdominal pain, achy joints, diarrhea, bloating, depression, migraines, thinning hair. (Hello beautiful).
I wouldn’t call my insufferable spot on the floor in the arid heat my “turning point,” per se. It was just another low point. But it’s an excellent example of someone trying to adventurously live their life but can’t because the body won’t let them.
I didn’t have a spiritual awakening at Burning Man. Alas, there were no visitations by a half naked man in coyote skins asking me riddles.
It was hard science that inevitably healed me. With tests, blood work, and numbers, I learned to speak my body’s language and give it what it needed to respond more eloquently.
But who’s to say that a spiritual quest can’t happen by way of science? Because how to feed your body is but one piece of the puzzle. The other piece pertains to how you live.
If your body is a passionate responder, you may have to change some lifestyle habits to live passionately along with it.
I eat clean, raise chickens, garden, teach yoga, meditate and journal daily.
And while that may seem obnoxiously stereotypical for a wholistically minded health professional, all I can say is, I live by the rules of my own book.
And while I can’t give you mine, I specialize in helping people write their own - by combining the art of living with the science of genes.
With the two working together, I promise - the body responds beautifully.
